Rihanna is searching Britain for the next generation of raw, undiscovered fashion designer talent and has hand-picked Girls Aloud star Nicola Roberts to head up the challenge for her.

Over eight weeks twelve unknown designers will be challenged by Rihanna and Nicola to create outfits for a string of musicians and celebrities. The show will celebrate the extraordinary talent and creativity in the British fashion scene. With Rihanna, a fashion icon herself, and Nicola, who created her own Dainty Doll make-up range, at the helm, the show will recognise the increasing influence popstars have on mainstream trends.

The final challenge and ultimate task for the winner will be to design a unique stage outfit for Rihanna’s Wireless performance in Hyde Park in July 2012. The chance to dress one of the world’s most famous women for an event that will attract worldwide coverage is the perfect springboard for the aspiring designer’s future fashion career.

British Fashion Council CEO welcomes Tillman extension

The British Fashion Council (BFC) announced that its honorary Chairman, Harold Tillman CBE, will extend his term through 2012.

Harold was appointed Chairman on 24th January 2008 taking over from Sir Stuart Rose. Under his guidance the BFC has become an effective promotional body for the industry through clarity of objectives and vision.

He has established the first full time management team for the organisation through the appointment of Caroline Rush to CEO and Simon Ward as COO. He played a lead role in moving London Fashion Week to Somerset House, personally negotiating with brands such as Burberry to return to London.

The BFC/Vogue Designer Fashion Fund was established as a registered charity with Harold securing financial support from key retailers and partners. He has maintained close relationships with the Mayor of London each year successfully bidding for support for British talent and London Fashion Week.

In 2010 Harold delivered the Value of Fashion report, defining the British fashion industry for the first time and assessing its true value to UK PLC. In 2011 he established the China Britain Fashion Alliance and has supported the development of the London show Rooms programme bringing in global partners to promote British talent overseas.

Internationally-acclaimed fashion designers Donna Karan accompanied Haitian Minister of the Interior, Thierry Mayard-Paul, as he visited the cities of Jeremiah and Jacmel during his "listening campaign."

The visits, a continuation of the Minister's tour of Haiti's heartland, are aimed at advancing the government's goals for building a sustainable economy through investments that support decentralization and drive job creation across all sectors, and throughout all the communities of Haiti.

Minister Mayard Paul and Ms. Karan met with Jacmel's Tourism Minister Ms. Stephanie B. Villedrouin and visited several hotels and tourist sites damaged by the January 2010 earthquake, including the Hotel Florita, the Jacmelienne Hotel and other severely damaged structures along the coast of the Southeast.

According to the Minister, these structures hold investment opportunities for the region. "Prior to the earthquake, Jacmel was one of Haiti's wealthiest cities, with considerable tourist assets," said Mayard-Paul. "With its favorable location, it holds great potential for development and job creation for this region."

In visiting the city of Jeremiah, Mayard-Paul solicited the needs of residents, and vowed to deliver on their requests for jobs through the ongoing efforts of the Martelly government to make Haiti a country favorable to business for national and international investors.

I have always been intrigued by the mysteries of the metaphysical, human nature, the natural environment, and the relationship between the three. Over the... years, these subjects have provided a never-ending source of inspiration for my artwork. My aim is to create a world for my characters in which there is a visual conversation stimulating thoughts of spirituality, intellectual curiosity, association, and dichotomy. Some of the themes I explore include memory, personal and collective identity, social and political issues, feminism, sexuality, chaos, order, peace, isolation, struggle, and freedom.

As I create my drawings, paintings, and mixed media work, I walk the tightrope between realism and abstraction, combining light and shadow, texture and flatness, black, white and color. In conveying my vision, I spontaneously experiment, deconstruct and construct during the artistic process relishing in the energy and intimacy with the media, often using my fingers and hands to apply, manipulate and remove the charcoal, pastel, ink, and paint.

Accomplished Georgian-American designer Patuna Bushyhead will show her latest ethereal designs at Couture Fashion Week at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday February 18, 2012. Marking the fashion designers first appearance at CFW, the fashion show will be held in the legendary Grand Ballroom of the Waldorf-Astoria on Park Avenue, New York City. It will be opened with a performance by singer Nini Shermadini, fresh from her recent appearance on Greece's "X Factor."

A native of the Republic of Georgia, now a U.S. citizen, Patuna Bushyhead spent her childhood studying and performing ballet, acting, folkloric dance, classical piano, painting, and pantomime. As a teenager she served as host of two nationally broadcast TV programs in Georgia. At age 16 she entered the Tbilisi State Institute to study gynecology, and later switched her field of study to dentistry, graduating top of her class as a doctor of dental surgery.

After working in a private dental practice, she met her American husband and they spent the next few years traveling the world including the USA, Mexico Western Europe, Russia, and the UAE, among other destinations. In 2008, Ms. Bushyhead made a career change from dentistry to her real passion: fashion. She is currently the owner and director of Patuna Fashion House.

In recent years, Ms. Bushyhead studied sketching with a professional tutor on anatomy, dress/shoe design and portraiture, and earned a degree in fashion merchandising and design, sewing/dressmaking and cosmetology/esthetics. Using her own technique of applying Swarovski crystals to her designs, Ms. Bushyhead created a dress for a fashion show in Georgia themed: "Beauty will survive the world." She applied over 2,000 Swarovski stones by hand depicting the map of Georgia and the phrase "I love my Georgia!" The flowing dress represents the Georgian National Grape Tree.

Rue Madame unveils third store in Hong Kong

Paris-based fashion retailer Rue Madame announced the opening of its third store in Hong Kong to capture growing opportunities in the city’s fast-growing fashion market.

The new store at Silvercord, Tsim Sha Tsui, also sets a milestone for Rue Madame as its first outlet in Kowloon. Its two other stores, at Lee Gardens in Causeway Bay and the IFC Mall in Central, opened in 2010.

Rue Madame is a fashion concept boutique chain for women, retailing well-known Parisian brands including Maje, Sandro, Claudie Pierlot, American Vintage, Majestic, Toupy, Sessun, Dress Gallery, Gat Rimon and more.

When founder Ariane Zagury first came to Hong Kong, Rue Madame looked towards the city’s diverse clientelle to support its latest expansion. Ms Zagury noted that the company’s Hong Kong patrons have a strong desire for fashionable brands and a Parisian label is a big attraction.

“Two years ago we saw a niche for fashionable brands between the luxury brands and mass retailers and we moved quickly. Today, our strategy is working just fine,” Ms Zagury said.

B'desh RMG exports to grow 15% in FY12 - Experts

Bangladesh readymade garment (RMG) exports are likely to grow by around 15 percent in 2011-12 over last fiscal, according to experts.

As per the statistics released for the first five months of the current fiscal by the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB), Bangladesh’s overall exports have grown by 18 percent year-on-year compared to a growth rate of 40 percent y-o-y observed last fiscal.

In July this year, exports from Bangladesh rose by 28.7 percent y-o-y, followed by a rise by 32.4 percent y-o-y in August. However, the growth rate declined to 2.29 percent y-o-y in September, 15.44 percent in October and 2.4 percent in November.

Speaking to fibre2fashion, Mr. Shubhashish Bose, Vice Chairman of EPB, said, “Bangladesh’s export target for 2011-12 is US$ 26.5 billion, which is much more than last year. We have figures from July to November 2011 and our exports have been worth US$ 9 billion during the five-month period and we hope we will be able to achieve our targets by the end of the year.”

“Out of the total exports, the RMG sector constitutes about 78-80 percent,” he informs.

Analysing the figures, Prof. Mustafizur Rahman, Executive Director of Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD), says, “Last year, the growth rate was 40 percent because the global demand was rising and 40 percent is an exceptionally high rate. But, one cannot expect the exports to grow at such a high rate every year. So, 18 percent growth rate on top of the 40 percent growth rate of last year is a remarkable growth.”

“For the garment sector, the prices of raw materials, i.e. cotton and yarn, have come down by 50-60 percent compared to last year. So, the price level and the cut and making charges being offered are somewhat lower this year. In light of these factors, the growth rate can be termed as significant,” he adds.

He further explains, “The profit margins have come down this year. And, because there has been a depressed demand in the markets of US and Europe, some shift is taking place from China to Bangladesh on offer of lower prices, which is benefiting the garment industry. Moreover, India has offered zero tariff access to all Bangladeshi items, which is also favouring our country’s exports.”

This initiative, supported by IMG Reliance and IMG’s International Fashion teams will mentor these designers and offer guidance on creating their collections, pricing, marketing, and all other aspects of design that will help them maximize this opportunity.

Trendsetting at UJ’s Fashion Fusion

On 15 November 2011- it was time for glitz and glam at the University of Johannesburg’s (UJ’s) Fashion Fusion. This annual event is hosted by the UJ Department of Fashion Design.

The best garment, designed and made by the students, are carefully selected by the lecturers. “Every year Fashion Fusion seems to set new standards”, says the Head of the UJ Department of Fashion Design, Mrs Desiree Smal.

This year Fashion Fusion took the format of a live fashion interaction. Guests were not only able to meet the designers and talk about the inspiration behind their designs, but also view the original sketches and get up close to the garments. This is along the lines of the latest international exhibiting trends for fashion, called ‘pop-up shops’.

Every year the event grows with more VIPs from the fashion industry, media and general fashion enthusiasts attending. Visitors were also able to view top work from University of Johannesburg Jewellery Design, Graphic Design, Multimedia and Fine Art students.

Leading department store, John Lewis, reported that sales last week (to Saturday 3 December 2011) rose 9.6 per cent year on year to hit £113.6m. This represents a 15.1 per cent rise in sales on the previous week and shows that John Lewis customers are forging ahead with their Christmas shopping.

While the figures were flattered by the snow which caused disruption to trade this time last year, sales were up 10.9 per cent on the same week two years ago, indicating a robust underlying trading performance.

Fashion trade was particularly brisk last week as the colder weather drove sales of coat, gloves and scarves as well as men's and women's cashmere, slippers and dressing gowns.

As customers continue to ready their houses for Christmas festivities, sales of furnishings, chairs and tableware continued their strong performance. Kitchen gadgets - such as Nespresso coffee machines - and sales in china and glass saw significant uplifts showing that dressing the Christmas table is a key focus for shoppers with just a couple of weeks to go before the entertaining season gets into full swing.

Commenting on trade this week, Nat Wakely, Director Selling Operations John Lewis, said: 'We are very pleased to have recorded such a strong uplift in sales this week particularly compared with two years ago when the figures were not skewed by heavy snowfall.

To coincide with the Private View and Press Briefing, we are looking for high quality fashion designers within the accessory and jewellery arena to feature in the shop during the exhibition period.

For many people the catwalk show is something exclusive, seemingly created for a few fashionistas that get to sit in the front row with the result a few outfits in magazines that they will never be able to afford. But there is much more to it than that and this new exhibition at the FTM will put the whole process from Catwalk to Cover under the microscope.

Charleston Fashion Week to host Emerging Bridal Designer Competition

Charleston Fashion Week's Spring Bridal Show debuts its first-ever Emerging Bridal Designer competition on March 24, 2012!

For the past five years, Charleston Fashion Week has served as a platform for emerging talent to showcase their designs and collections to industry experts, press, and the public.

In addition to five nights of shows, CFW, along with Charleston Weddings magazine, also hosts a standing-room-only daytime bridal event featuring established, high-end regional and national Fashion designers.

Next year, the white gloves will come off when the Spring Bridal Show debuts its first-ever Emerging Bridal Designer competition.

The winner will headline his or her own fully produced runway show during the Charleston Weddings magazine Spring Bridal Show, with a collection of 10-12 bridal gowns and/or wedding party wear on March 24th.

Oliver Tolentino dresses Gwendoline Ruais for Miss World

Gwendoline Ruais became the highest Miss Philippines to rank in 37 years when she was named "1st Runner Up" (Miss Venezuela won). Gwen wore a red flowy chiffon Oliver Tolentino gown with a slit in the leg that was made expressly for her for the pageant.

The gown had a bodice beaded with red Swarovski crystals and a nude skin back. This was a personal honor for Oliver because it's the first time a Filipino Fashion designer has been allowed to create clothes in many decades under new country manager Cory Quirino.

Coincidentally, the first "1st Runner Up" 37 years ago was Evangeline Pascual who hails from Orani, Bataan. Oliver, also from Orani, is a distant cousin of Ms. Pascual.

For the pageant, Gwen also wore an Oliver Tolentino pina & abaca modern terno for the national costume portion of the TV show. In addition, Gwen was photographed in about a dozen of Oliver's outfits while she was in London.

She wore Oliver's dyed-blue pina skirt and blouse outfit to depart Manila and arrive in London, a silver sequined long gown when contestants were photographed along the Thames River, a green chiffon for the first charity event, and a raw silk cocoon cocktail dress at another event, among others.

Oliver somehow found time to make Gwen's outfits before returning to Los Angeles from Manila where he was honored as the Samsung 2011 MetroWear Icon of the Philippines by Metro & Metro Society magazines, in conjunction with the ABS-CBN TV network, last October 24.

Perth Fashion Festival (PFF) is in full swing with ‘extraordinary’ Western Australian creative talent on show across the City of Perth.

The second Fashion Designer Capsule series saw an explosion of colour and print hit the runway as designers Poppy Lissiman, On Tour and Bhalo wowed the crowds with their Spring Summer 2011/12 collections.

Yesterday also saw the first of the WA stand-alone shows at Fashion Paramount take place. Internationally acclaimed designer Story by Tang took to the runway to showcase her high-profile Spring Summer 2011/12 collection. On Wednesday, celebrity gossip website TMZ reported that “Jersey Shore” star Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi’s representative claimed Obscene Jeans had no right to use her name in promoting its product placement agreement with Celeb Branding, LLC. Snooki’s rep was quoted as saying, "The inclusion of Ms. Polizzi's name in the announcement was unauthorized. Ms. Polizzi has never been approached by the company."

Obscene Jeans Corp. signed a product placement agreement with Celeb Branding, LLC, to provide jeans for the “Jersey Shore” cast members’ televised and print magazine interviews and appearances. The TMZ report left little doubt that Celeb Branding couldn’t deliver on the terms of the deal.

The first time you meet him, he comes across as a fun loving youngster, with an unshaved look and who may be living life in the fast lane. The warm smile and humble but firm handshake, immediately disarms you and within moments you feel, you have known him since a million years.

He is only 26 years, but displays a maturity much beyond his age. The leadership qualities are reminiscent of those seen in his illustrious father and forefathers. His lineage did not mean a direct entry into the boardroom, but he earned his stripes, by working his way up from the bottom to the boardroom.

After graduating with an electrical engineering degree from Stanford University, he preferred to first work outside the family-owned textile group in management consulting firm - Mckinsey, to learn management styles firsthand and now is pursuing an MBA from Harvard, which he expects to pass out next year.

He is none other than Kulin Lalbhai, second son of Mr Sanjay Lalbhai - CMD of the Rs 40 billion - Arvind Ltd. Kulin is from the fourth generation of a family, which traces its roots to Shri Kasturbhai Lalbhai, who laid the foundation of what is now Arvind Ltd.

He studied at the Green Lawns School in Worli, Mumbai and completed his Bachelors of Science in Business Management from University of Southern California (USC), majoring in finance and entrepreneurship. He calls the beaches of Worli as his playground when young, as his school was located very close to a beach.

He has also done a certificate course in ‘Family Managed Businesses” (FMB) from SP Jain Institute of Management. He is married to Kanika, who has done her BMS from NM College, Mumbai and also the certificate course in FMB from SP Jain, which is, where they met for the first time.

Varun is not a voracious reader, but counts the ‘Bourne’ series by fiction writer Robert Ludlum amongst his favourites. He also loves watching movies. When traveling overseas, he prefers to relax on a beach, rather than sightsee. He has traveled to most of the European countries, Australia, South Africa and the United States.

RTRW Inc plans expansion

Philippines-based Real Time Real Wear (RTRW) Inc. will be opening 10 stores in the country by 2012 under its brand ‘Charlie’. Beginning middle of 2013, the company also plans to expand in the international market, with its first store in Malaysia, according to the company’s CEO Rikki Dee Jr.

The newcomer brand is going to position itself for its quality, trendy, but affordable apparel. RTRW has allocated a budget of PHP 10 million for its expansion related expenses this year.

Currently, RTRW has only one outlet situated at The Block in SM. Its larger stores are soon going to open in SM San Lazaro and SM Fairview. While a concept store will open in November in SM Manila, another five stores will be opened in 2012.

Before opening its outlets abroad, RTRW has a vision to be known as a “reliable, affordable, and active fashion brand” in Philippines, according to Dee. He said that the most costly item is priced at only PHP 999 whereas the price of the most affordable item is about PHP 300.

In its first three months of operation, RTRW has seen overwhelming sales and the company expects to recover its investments in about eights months time. Nearly 70 percent of the company’s sales are women’s apparels.

World's largest apron - A record effort by Ambadi Enterprises

Ambadi Enterprises Ltd., a part of the USD 3.8 billion Murugappa Group, displayed the world’s largest apron on the grassy expanse of YMCA grounds at Chennai. The all white apron measuring about 25 metres x 22 metres (total fabric area of 853 sq. metres, weighing 100 kgs) is expected to beat the current Guinness record of 15.4 metres x 17.6 metres held by a Spanish Manufacturer since 2007.

718 metres of 20sx20s sheeting greige fabric purchased in Karur (Tamil Nadu) was transformed to the final apron displayed at Chennai (Tamil Nadu) today, by the joint effort of teams at the different units of Ambadi. The fabric was bleached at Erode and the apron outline was sketched at the design studio at Gurgaon (Haryana). Finally the cutting, stitching and printing was done at the Kannur unit (Kerala). The cutting team of 26 women spent 182 man-days to cut the fabric and the stitching team of 8 spent 40 man-days to put the apron together.

“The teams had to overcome a few difficulties during the whole process – including, having to factor in the Kerala monsoon effect. For instance, they didn’t have enough space to lay and cut the fabric and had to lay it in the vacant lot outside the factory even as the monsoon rains were threatening to pour down. The Ambadi logo measuring 5 sq metres was a critical part of the design and took longer time to print and dry in the damp weather. In all, the efforts have paid off and today, we have been able to put out a bold statement about our capabilities,” elaborated Vishy Shenoy, Business Head - Ambadi Enterprises.

Currently, Fida – a Kolkata based brand is available through 22 outlets in 13 Tier-I and Tier-II cities like Mumbai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Delhi, Bangalore, Indore, Bhopal, Surat and Kanpur.

Fashion centres to boost Taiwan’s textile industry

Taiwan’s Industrial Development Bureau (IDB) has initiated a new fashion hub in Taipei and in other regions across the country. The new fashion centres have been established by the IDB in cooperation with three industry research organizations and a number of local governments.

The fashion centres are established with an aim to intensify Taiwan’s textile industry’s design and technology innovation and to boost its global competitiveness.

Taiwan’s Premier Wu Den-yih said that the opening of the new centres, marks the beginning of a new era for ‘Made in Taiwan’ (MIT) products.

With assistance of the IDB under the Ministry of Economic Affairs and the Taiwan Textile Federation (TTF), Fashion Institute of Taipei (FIT) was transformed into a fashion centre from a fashion cultural hall.

According to experts, Taiwan’s textile industry has earned itself a good recognition amongst customers across the globe. Besides, an increasing number of Taiwanese designers are bagging prestigious global fashion awards.

The launch of new textile design hubs in Changhua, Yuniln, Taipei and Taichung regions are believed to boost the MIT brand with improved quality, more innovative designs and enhanced value addition. Custom Clothing Designer, John-David Mohr of the House of Mohr, coined the phrase “Style has no Size.” He talks about this Fall season's fashion trends and how the conscience consumer can maintain their own sense of style with custom clothing that transcends into any season.

“If you notice, it’s not the lines of fashion which change dramatically from season to season. It is the fabrics and colors that change the most,” says John-David, a Custom Clothing Designer and owner of the House of Mohr fashion boutique. To be on top of the latest season's style, all one has to do is change out the fabric and color patterns. Switching from Summer to Fall, change out your fabric from a silk to a cashmere or fine wool fabric using Fall season's trending colors. "This way, you maintain your own style, yet still enjoy looking and feeling totally fashionable," explains John-David.

Most of John-David's designs can be taken apart and put back together-- the skirts and jackets, pants and tops can all be intermingled and mixed in a myriad of ways to come up with a style that is entirely personalized and matches the season's fashion. According to John-David, this is the difference between ‘style’ and ‘fashion’. “Style is what you do with the latest fashion trends,” according to John-David. The House of Mohr designs sophisticated and trendy, yet classic garment that can be mixed and matched to transform from lightweight fabric of Spring and Summer into Fall or Winter fabrics.

The lace and flowery patterns of this Spring and Summer are trending into the Fall 2011 fashion season, explains John-David, but the lace of Fall is a darker, more powerful color and weight to match the rich hues and chillier air of Autumn. “If you own a particular garment which really flatters you, simply have a similar item of clothing custom designed using the upcoming season’s fabric weight and colors. Revised dates for WIFW Spring/Summer, Now to be held in October

Fashion Design Council of India - FDCI announced new dates for Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2012, which is now scheduled for Oct 8-12, 2011 at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi. The event was initially scheduled for the month of September.

FDCI has become instrumental in propelling the Indian fashion industry to tread the global business oriented path and believes in delivering the best designers event and top quality venue. Due to the unavailability of the most coveted hall no. 18 of Pragati Maidan and clash with international fashion events, FDCI has decided to postpone the event to October 2011.

Mr. Sunil Sethi, President, FDCI said, “The upcoming Spring/Summer edition of Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week has been rescheduled to October. This is primarily due to the conflicting dates with other international fashion events and the non availability of the Hall no. 18 at Pragati Maidan that has become the standard venue for WIFW. We look forward to the best of Indian fashion designers participating in the event.”
